Thomas Middleton Insult of the Day
"Out, you babliaminy, you unfetherd cremitoryed queane, you cullisance of scabiosity!" Thus sayeth Damp-it, of A Trick to Catch the Old One. Twenty lines earlier he refers to the same woman as "the mullipoop of villainy." That's got to sting. |

One of my students just about called me a "babliaminy" in his essay. He didn't use that word, but the conclusion to his essay begins, "So the crimes Richard commits were of little importance. Why does this fact matter? Lack of importance means that a scene or act is overrated. 'Valuable class time' shouldn't be wasted studying it." As this snippet suggests, he doesn't like the last act of Richard II. And he clearly doesn't like that he found himself writing about it (though he did have five other options). So there's one person who'll be dragging down my course evaluation average.
The weird thing is that I was previously under the mistaken impression that the kid was enjoying the class and pretty smart. He may be smart, but he wrote one bad essay. And I think it's safe to say he isn't liking the class. Sigh.
If they couched their complaints in ye olde terms, I think everyone would at least be a bit more amused. Maybe that's something I could suggest. [/pointless, off-topic rambling]
